2012 Window Style

2012: Your year of style!

Gone are the days of trying to perfectly match all your blinds, window coverings and upholstery throughout your home. Mixing it up with versatility, function and style is now defining the modern home.

New and renovated homes generally feature a combination of bi-fold doors, sliding doors and large spanning windows or glass features and each type of function requires it’s own window or door covering.
  • Roman blinds are great for covering bi-fold doors; they are easy to drop down at night when you want privacy, while they allow natural sunlight in and stay out of the way during the day when the door is open.

  • Shutters are the most popular option in the kitchen, lounge room and even theatre rooms and rumpus areas: they are easy to clean and provide privacy and light when needed.

Bright Blinds are the Trend in Window Dressing

Gone are the days when you could only get blinds in white, cream or wood – not that there’s anything wrong with these colours, far from it sometimes they are the colours which are most suitable for a room; however, brightly coloured blinds this year’s window dressing trends!

One of the reasons bright colours will feature heavily on interior design is in part due to the downturn in the economy. Designers believe that consumers want and need to be cheered up without having to resort to spending mass amounts of money, step-in bright blinds and take a curtain call – as ready-made blinds are one of the least expensive soft furnishings you can buy which make a difference to the dynamics of a room.

Not only that blinds also embrace the other trends of being eco-friendly, economical, thermal efficient, along with choosing muted colours of mist and fog if bright colours don’t suit your colour scheme. You also have the option of using on-trend brights with patterns as well as being able to team them with contrasting coloured curtains if you so wish.

If you like the idea of moving away from white blinds but don’t want to take the plunge and go really bright you always have the option of going for mid-range colours to break yourself in gently! As many blinds are cheap it won’t matter if you swap them for something brighter further n in the year. However, if you want to beat the winter blues, shop online in the sales and grab yourself a brightly coloured window blinds to bring cheerful optimism into your home.

Treating Sliding Doors with Blinds

Sliding doors present a unique decorating situation. Because they are doors and yet they allow a huge amount of light in like windows, sliding doors can create that comfortable sunny spot in the house which requires a manageable kind of covering that must allow them to open and close freely.

Blinds can enhance the appearance of sliding panels and provide optimum privacy and light control. Make sure to mount the blinds at the ceiling line, make sure they are also versatile enough you can totally draw them to the side, keeping the walkway clear. To control glare and sunlight throughout the day, try a layered treatment of opaque roller blinds or flimsy draperies over mini blinds.

Blinds are Best for Daysleepers

I come home at crazy hours because of my work, going through different late night shifts throughout the week and by the time dawn breaks, I'm just about in bed ready to snooze. But sleep can be difficult for a day sleeper like me, since my body clock follows a different time zone and I am very sensitive to light, my sleep can easily get interrupted.

Curtains were doing me a disservice, often cloth can't really cut the light out. In order to sleep properly, I need to fool my body into thinking its actually night time. Its not easy to fool that internal body clock that signals your brain to go get some shuteye, once light gets through, I'm in for a rough ride.

Gladly though, after a few sleepless nights, I finally made a choice to get some blinds installed in my room. I got the light control I wanted. I got my blinds motorized and can easily shift my room into pitch darkness. Instant night. Just what my body needs. Blinds are really best for people who need full sleep during day time. I highly recommend blinds for people who work night shifts at hospitals, call centers, factories, airports. I have never slept this comfortably and I'm glad I got my blinds fitted over the weekend.

Choosing the Right Fabric for your Blinds

Going for made-to-measure blinds gives you that versatile option of choosing the right material for your home’s window dressings. The kind of blinds fabric you choose should be suitable to the weather, heat, window location in your house and window style.

Fabrics can absorb sound that bounces off walls and soften the look of hard-edged furniture. Fabrics on window blinds can easily bring about color and texture to any space, giving a much needed boost to your overall mood.

Coordinated collections of fabrics maybe the style statement your space needs. From your window treatments such as blinds to other fabric accents of table tops and chair upholstery, choosing the right fabric can create that dreamy finish that you desire.

Fabrics for window blinds should be:
1. Cleanable- You should choose materials that are easy to wash or dust off.
2. Coated for light control- this gives you a degree of control over glare coming in through your windows. You can choose an opaque material or semi-transparent coating to keep things light and airy.
3. Enhance your room- Colors, texture, patterns should bring out the best in your space.
